Maclean
Contest Weekend
The
weekend started with the solos on the Friday. We had three entrants Dianna
Daley and Campbell McLeod on the pipes and Brad King on the side drum.
The highlights being;
Dianna
- 1st Elementary Slow Air
Brad - 1st Sub Intermediate Side drum
3rd Elementary Side drum
The
Friday night was to be a quiet affair down at the Top Pub but as usual
a few members took it a little further and were still partying early
into the next morning back at the boat shed where we were staying.
They
managed to get themselves going the next morning for the street march.
We enjoyed a few hours back at the boat shed before heading down to the
showground at around lunch time. We had four
plays on the day two being in 3rd grade and
two
in 2nd grade.
We
were
happy
with our
performances
considering
a few little slip ups were made. However, at least the weather appeared
to be on our side. During our second last play it started to
spit rain.
As
soon
as we
got off
the field and the next band went on it bucketed down, as we watched from
the stables. Then remarkably as we prepared to march on for our last
play of the day, the clouds
parted and allowed
us to play
unscathed.

After
the contest the usual tradition preceded with ingesting much alcohol
at the beer tent and later at the Top Pub. The night then continued with
every one from the Pub (i think) making their way to the boat shed to
drink
and
play
pipes
and
drums (with varying degrees of competence!!) late into the night.

Armidale
Autumn Festival
After
playing at the Retired Mineworkers Dinner at Myuna Bay until about 7:30 pm,
we packed the bus, made a stop in for supplies at the Morriset Pub and
set of towards Armidale. We arrived in Armidale in the early hours of
the Saturday morning and managed to get a couple of hours sleep before
the street march.
The
next morning wasn't pretty!! However, we managed to get organised and
made our way down to the start of the street march. We got through the
street march and massed bands.
Later
that night there was an outdoor ceildh and most of the bands were in
attendance. After playing a few tunes for the crowd most of the band
left to head back to our accommodation. After a few extra drinks the
remaining members slowly made their way
back to
the
accommodation, stopping in at every pub they saw to play a few
tunes and get some free drinks. Finally they made it to Tattersalls Pub
were we
were staying and after playing a few more tunes there continued to party
away on the dance floor till the nights end.
A
good weekend was had by all, an occasion not to be missed!!!

Moss
Vale Contest
A few members of the band arrived in time for the solo piping and drumming
events which started at ten o’clock. However one entrant almost
didn’t make it after the driver of their car decided to take a short
detour through Dapto. Brad King, Matt Spicer and Dianna Daley all competed
in the elementary and sub-intermediate sections. Brad won 2nd place
in the elementary side drumming. Matt won 3rd place in the elementary
slow
air and 2nd place in the sub-intermediate strathspey - reel. Dianna
won 3rd place in the elementary march, 2nd place in the elementary
slow air and 2nd place in the sub-intermediate march.
By 12'oclock all the band members had arrived and it was time to begin
warming up and tuning. We played in both third grade and second grade. We
came first in third grade beating Blacktown 2 and Sydney Thistle. However,
we were not placed in second grade. We played well and showed a great deal
of improvement since our last competition. We now look forward to our next
competition which is in Maclean on the Easter weekend.

Westpac
Rescue Helicopter gig
At no later than 7:00 the band was asked to arrive at the Broadmeadow
Westpac Helicopter Base in order to play for their tenth annual fundraising
bike ride. A dedicated bunch of band members managed to pull themselves out
of bed at an early hour of the morning in order to arrive bleary eyed but
ready to play. The band played a number times whilst team photos were being
taken and then lined both sides of the road for the bike riders to ride between.
The band was there on behalf of the Australian United Mine Workers Union
who are sponsors of the Westpac Helicopter.

Bright
and early on Saturday morning the band arrived at Cessnock to play for
the last ever Freedom of The City ceremony for HMAS Cessnock. After a
couple of standing selections and the street march, we returned to our
cars and headed north for Gladestone.
The
band arrived at Gladstone Pub in the early afternoon and had a few light
refreshments before getting ready for the evenings events. We played
and danced throughout
the night and finished up in the early hours of the next morning.
On
Sunday morning we struggled out of bed, with many players being slightly
under the weather. We played for the Gladstone Remembrance Day
Service and street march and then returned to the pub for lunch. A busy
but enjoyable weekend was had by all.

It
was the day of the Holmesville Pub Centenary and the Mineworkers Pipe Band
joined in with the festivities. The day started with a street march around
the block that the pub sits upon and then continued with a few more sets
being played in the pub itself, along with a fair few beers (OLD of course).
